La Reserve Claret | Bordeaux

2006

Our house claret selected from Saint Emilion vineyards and blended exclusively for us by larger than life Jonathan Maltus, producer of Château Teyssier and Le Dôme, one of Saint Emilion’s greatest (and most expensive) wines. This is a really superb everyday wine and is much more than just a normal claret.

The Press
‘The search for an above average house Claret is over. For the price this wine really excites. It has everything one looks for in decent red Bordeaux: notes of pencil shavings, cedar wood and ripe berries—a must for every Sunday roast.’—Will Lyons, Scotland on Sunday

‘What I've enjoyed most this week….. I had to double check the price, so modest is it for such a grown-up wine. Firm, well-structured, with ripe fruit and whiffs of cedarwood, this is everything that a Claret should be.’—Jonathan Ray, The Daily Telegraph, June 2009

‘Made by the winemaker of two grands châteaux who, commissioned by this boutique online retailer, has coaxed classic flavours of cedar, “lead pencil” and dark fruit from unclassified Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in St Emilion. Weepingly good at the price.’—Bob Tyrer, The Sunday Times, 12th April 2009-04-14

‘It leaps gazelle-like from the glass with all the grace and precision you hope for in a Claret—meaty dishes like Jo’s Pork Chops have met their match.’—Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail, March 2009
Our tasting notes
Rich fruit and berries and typical Right Bank Saint Emilion nose. Full, not over concentrated. Good long finish. Exceptional drinking claret that goes really well with food- lunch or dinner. Very good value.

About Jonathan Maltus
Jonathan is considered somewhat of a maverick in the wine making world (if you hadn’t already guessed from his photo) and has been branded a ‘cult winemaker’ by magazines like Decanter.

He bought Chateau Teyssier in 1996, the first of many Saint Emilion properties, the most notable of which is now Le Dôme, a Grand Cru estate that produces only 1000 cases a year. Le Dôme now sells for well over £1,000 a case and has been lauded by critics like Robert Parker.
