Comte Leloup de Chasseloir
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie
2005
NEWA different—and in our view the best—Muscadet there is. Made from 100-year-old vines by Bernard Carré with grapes all meticulously picked by hand and aged with their 'lees' to give richness and body. Most of this very small production goes to France's top restaurants.

The Press
'The Muscadet is quite sensational.'—Simon Hoggart, The Spectator, April 2008Our tasting notes
Pale yellow in colour with a rich and concentrated nose. Firm, ripe, mature fruit—almost vigorous. Rich and refreshing with complex flavours. A very serious Muscadet that will go with anything, although langoustines and oysters immediately spring to mind.Wine data

About Muscadet
Muscadet is produced in 4 appellations around the City of Nantes in the Loire—Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is the best of them. The top producers make their wine 'sur lie'—leaving the grape lees in with the wine for up to 6 months to give it extra body and richness. The wines are made with a unique grape, Melon de Bourgogne, which was introduced into the region by the Dutch wine trade in the 17th century. While much Muscadet remains pretty ordinary and unexciting, there has as elsewhere in France been a winemaking revolution in the last few years and the best 'sur lie' wines have a bone-dry tangy freshness that is perfect with seafood.
